The Champaign County Executive’s office began phase one of moving into downtown Urbana earlier today. After years of planning and renovation, Champaign County officials are finalizing preparations to move into the newly refurbished Scott M. Bennett Administrative Center, formerly known as County Plaza.

In one of Central Illinois’ closest mayoral races, Sam Hall unseated three-term incumbent Chuck Smith by just 34 votes — 684 to 650 — becoming Rantoul’s first African American mayor. Hall now joins Terrence Stuber in Tolono and DeShawn Williams in Urbana as part of a historic wave of new leadership breaking barriers across the region.

For the first time in over a decade, Rantoul will have a new mayor. Sam Hall has been elected, defeating longtime incumbent Charles Smith.

The renovations on the Scott M. Bennett Administrative Center, formerly known as County Plaza, are nearing completion, and county offices are preparing to relocate into the newly renovated facility. The County purchased the building in 2022 and began renovations in 2023.
