Champaign County administration begins the move into renovated Bennett Center

The Champaign County Executive’s office began phase one of moving into downtown Urbana earlier today. After years of planning and renovation, Champaign County officials are finalizing preparations to move into the newly refurbished Scott M. Bennett Administrative Center, formerly known as County Plaza.

In one of Central Illinois’ closest mayoral races, Sam Hall unseated three-term incumbent Chuck Smith by just 34 votes — 684 to 650 — becoming Rantoul’s first African American mayor. Hall now joins Terrence Stuber in Tolono and DeShawn Williams in Urbana as part of a historic wave of new leadership breaking barriers across the region.

Savoy Village President candidates speaking at the Savoy Municipal Center

The Forum will be live-streamed on the Village of Savoy Facebook page. A recording of the session will be available after the event on the League of Women Voters YouTube channel. The Consolidated Municipal Election is April 1. In-person early voting begins March 12 at the Brookens Administrative Center and opens at county-wide locations on March 24.

Champaign councilman apologizes for posting swastika, but won’t step down from seat

Dozens of community members spoke on Tuesday night about how they felt after Champaign Councilman Davion Williams posted a swastika on Facebook last Friday. Williams, a representative for District 1, listened as residents, faith leaders, and fellow council members asked him to step down from the council. While Williams publicly apologized and acknowledged the harm he caused, he ultimately refused to step down from his position despite numerous calls to do so.
