ISP backs a bill expanding on the investigation of internet crimes against children

A new measure would allow the ISP explicitly to investigate internet crimes against children as a core mission of its criminal division. House Bill 2586, also called Alicia’s Law, would add to the current 13 missions of the Illinois State Police Department of Criminal Investigations. The bill passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly unanimously in late May. The bill is named after Alicia Kozak, who was at the first nationally child grooming and abduction case in 2002.

Two men arrested in Paxton cocaine bust following early morning raid

Two Central Illinois men were arrested Wednesday morning in Paxton on cocaine-related charges following a police raid. Authorities say 31-year-old Zonte L. Portis of Paxton and 47-year-old Armoane L. Larkins of Rantoul were taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance—between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine, a Class 1 felony. Portis faces an additional Class X felony for possession with intent to deliver.

State of Illinois reaffirm pregnant women’s right to abortion

An amendment to the Illinois Hospital Emergency Services Act requires pregnant women in Illinois hospital emergency departments are able to access life-saving, medically necessary care. This comes with the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services rescinded guidance, which was originally issued by the Biden administration in July 2022. The guidance followed U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs the constitutional right to abortion.

Charles Isbell named next Chancellor of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Charles Lee Isbell Jr., currently provost at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has been appointed as the next chancellor of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and vice president of the University of Illinois System. Pending formal approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, Isbell will officially begin his tenure on August 1. He will serve in a designate capacity beginning July 16 as outgoing Chancellor Robert Jones concludes his term.
