CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A field fire that began as a controlled burn spread unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift response from four local fire departments in Champaign County. The Champaign Fire Department arrived on the scene near Rising and Windsor Roads just after noon, where the blaze had consumed about 10 acres of land. It took approximately an hour and a half to contain the fire, which posed a potential threat to nearby structures.
Thankfully, the wind kept the fire away from buildings, and no injuries were reported. However, fire officials warned that had the wind shifted by just 180 degrees, the situation could have been much more dangerous. In response to the escalating fire, the Cornbelt, Bondville, and Seymour fire departments provided mutual aid, bringing in specialized equipment to tackle the fire.
The Champaign Fire Department is urging residents to stay informed about burn and weather warnings to prevent similar incidents in the future.
