CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – In recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Champaign Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies across the state to intensify enforcement of distracted driving laws throughout April.
Motorists can expect increased patrols and heightened scrutiny for signs of driver distraction, along with other traffic violations. The goal is to promote safer roads by encouraging drivers to give their full attention while behind the wheel.
Champaign Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler emphasized the importance of paying attention while driving, stating, “Every time we drive, we share the right-of-way with pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles large and small. We owe it to ourselves and our fellow travelers to give our full attention to the road and do our part to get everyone home safe.”
Under Illinois law, using a phone for anything other than hands-free calls is not only dangerous but also illegal. However, distracted driving is not limited to phone use. Activities such as eating, applying makeup, using in-car navigation, or even interacting with passengers can divert a driver’s attention from the road, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, distracted driving crashes claimed 58 lives in the state in 2023.
During the month-long campaign, officers will focus on visible enforcement, aiming to raise awareness and reduce accidents caused by distracted driving. Citations and written warnings will be issued to drivers who violate traffic laws, particularly those related to distractions. In Champaign, efforts will be concentrated on arterial routes, especially in areas near neighborhoods.
This distracted driving enforcement initiative is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
