RANTOUL, IL (Chambana Today) – An abandoned home on County Road 1900 E was destroyed in a fire Friday night after a brush fire got out of control, according to the Rantoul Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched around 8 p.m. to 2951 County Road 1900 E after receiving reports of a structure fire. By 10:29 p.m., firefighters had extinguished the main flames, though the structure continued to smolder late into the night. Rantoul Fire Chief Chad Smith said the fire started when a nearby homeowner was burning brush, which quickly spread and ignited the abandoned house. No injuries were reported, but the home has been declared a total loss.

The Rantoul Fire Department was assisted on scene by multiple surrounding agencies, including:

  • Ludlow Fire Protection District

  • Gifford Fire Protection District

  • Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District

  • St. Joseph Fire Protection District

Photos shared by the department on its Facebook page show the house fully engulfed in flames during the peak of the response. Officials are urging the public to avoid the area for safety reasons.
