SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a national initiative established in 1987 by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol misuse and to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction.

Through local events, educational campaigns, and conversations, Alcohol Awareness Month encourages individuals, families, and communities to learn more about the risks of excessive alcohol use and support those affected by it. “The ILCC remains committed to educating the public, and especially youth, about the risk factors associated with abusing alcohol and underage drinking,” said Illinois Liquor Control Commission Executive Director Lisa Gardner. “If we can prevent one person from being affected by the dangers of alcohol, then all the work and energy we put into promoting alcohol awareness is worth it.”

How You Can Support Alcohol Awareness Month:

  • Get informed about the dangers of excessive alcohol use
  • Advocate for healthy coping mechanisms and lifestyle alternatives
  • Encourage early intervention and support recovery for those in need

Whether it’s preventing underage drinking, recognizing the early signs of alcohol dependency in a loved one, or supporting someone in recovery, this month serves as a reminder that community awareness and support are powerful tools in addressing alcohol-related challenges. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol use, it’s important to reach out to a healthcare provider or support group specialized in alcohol recovery. Illinois resources include Prevention First and the Alcohol Policy Resource Center.
