CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The University of Illinois has officially locked in the leadership of its two premier sports programs, announcing six-year contract extensions for football head coach Bret Bielema and men’s basketball head coach Brad Underwood. The deals, announced Tuesday, will keep Bielema and Underwood in Champaign through 2030 and 2030–31 respectively, pending approval by the university’s board of trustees on May 22.

Bielema, whose new deal starts at $7.7 million per year, has guided Illinois football to a dramatic turnaround. In 2024, the Illini posted a 10-3 record, matching the program’s single-season win record and earning a Citrus Bowl victory over South Carolina. The Illini finished the season ranked No. 16 in the AP poll — their highest finish in over two decades.

Underwood, earning $4.4 million annually under the new contract, has led Illinois basketball to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and an Elite Eight run in 2024. Despite significant roster turnover, the Illini won 22 games last season, reinforcing Underwood’s reputation for rebuilding and competitive consistency.

Both coaches are eligible for annual retention incentives — starting at $700,000 for Bielema and $1.15 million for Underwood — as well as four potential one-year extensions based on performance.

I am fortunate to work every day with an athletic director that fully believes in our football program,” said Bielema. Underwood echoed the sentiment, citing “alignment” with the administration and athletic department as a key to sustained success.

Athletic Director Josh Whitman, who hired both coaches, praised the long-term vision of the deals. “This commitment reflects our belief in their leadership and the trajectory of Illinois Athletics,” Whitman said in a statement.
