URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – OSF HealthCare has announced a major transformation aimed at strengthening care delivery across east central Illinois. As part of the changes, OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana and OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville will merge into a single hospital operating across two campuses, effective January 1, 2026, pending regulatory approval.

The Urbana campus will be restructured to provide specialized inpatient behavioral health services, addressing a critical and growing need in the region. While the focus will shift, emergency services, inpatient beds, diagnostics, labs, and other clinics will remain available on-site.

OSF says the decision follows months of analysis, community engagement, and a commitment to delivering sustainable, high-quality care. “This transformation is about meeting unmet needs, addressing provider shortages, and delivering care more effectively across our region,” the health system said in a statement.

Since acquiring both hospitals in 2018, OSF HealthCare has invested in the facilities, but persistent financial losses, underutilized inpatient services, and the loss of key providers prompted leadership to reevaluate their approach. The new model aims to eliminate redundancies, align services, and expand access to behavioral health—especially for young adults, seniors, and patients with complex co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.

Recognizing the potential impact on staff, OSF pledged to support affected employees, known as Mission Partners, by helping them transition into more than 170 available roles locally and additional opportunities across the health system.

“We will work individually with each Mission Partner to provide support, resources, and guidance,” the organization stated.
