ILLINOIS (Chambana Today) — State officials are urging residents to become more informed about potential chemical hazards in their communities as part of Hazardous Materials Awareness Month this April.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security is leading the effort alongside several partner agencies, including the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Labor, and the Illinois Fire Service Institute. Together, they work to monitor hazardous materials, provide safety guidance, and support emergency response efforts across the state.
Officials say many residents may not realize what types of chemicals are stored or used nearby, or how to interpret safety markings on buildings. Acting Director Theodore Berger emphasized the importance of awareness and preparedness, noting that facilities storing certain hazardous chemicals are required to submit annual inventory reports. These reports help ensure that first responders and emergency planners have the information needed to protect communities in the event of a spill or release.
According to state officials, Illinois has nearly 9,200 facilities that report hazardous chemical inventories under federal guidelines. While these materials can be used safely when properly handled, coordination between state agencies and local responders is key to minimizing risk.
The agency also works closely with local emergency planning committees and first responders to maintain up-to-date training and response strategies. These efforts are supported in part by federal funding and are regularly updated to reflect current safety standards.
