SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputy Sean Grayson was arrested Wednesday, July 17, 2024, for the first-degree murder of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black woman who called 911 to report an intruder.
Massey had dialed 911 hurriedly to report an intruder inside of her home on July 6, 2024. Grayson and an unnamed deputy arrived at the scene around 12:50 a.m. Reports say shots were fired as early as 1:21 a.m., with Massey succumbing to one gunshot wound. Grayson was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. Both deputies were reported as completely unharmed.
The shooting sparked multiple protests with over 200 supporters in front of the Springfield NAACP building, demanding justice for the death of Massey and accountability from the police. Donna Massey, mother to Sonya Massey, was one of protesters while mourning the loss of her daughter. Officials have reported very little information regarding the events between 12:50 a.m. and 1:21 a.m.
The Illinois State Police Department (ISPD) is currently investigating the incident, and officials are rallying together in support of Massey. According to Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser, the ISPD did not support a finding that Grayson was justified in his use of deadly force. Governor J. B. Pritzker also put out an official statement on the matter.
“Sonya Massey was concerned for her safety and called law enforcement to her home for protection. Like all Illinoisans, she deserved that protection. Instead, innocent and unarmed, she was gunned down by an officer of the law,” the governor announced.
“My heart breaks for Sonya’s children, for her family and friends and for all who knew and loved her, and I am enraged that another innocent Black woman had her life taken from her at the hands of a police officer,” Pritzker said.
