ISP backs a bill expanding on the investigation of internet crimes against children

A new measure would allow the ISP explicitly to investigate internet crimes against children as a core mission of its criminal division. House Bill 2586, also called Alicia’s Law, would add to the current 13 missions of the Illinois State Police Department of Criminal Investigations. The bill passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly unanimously in late May. The bill is named after Alicia Kozak, who was at the first nationally child grooming and abduction case in 2002.

State of Illinois reaffirm pregnant women’s right to abortion

An amendment to the Illinois Hospital Emergency Services Act requires pregnant women in Illinois hospital emergency departments are able to access life-saving, medically necessary care. This comes with the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services rescinded guidance, which was originally issued by the Biden administration in July 2022. The guidance followed U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs the constitutional right to abortion.

Illinois Department of Revenue remind taxpayers to file an amended return

Use the Correct Form – Always file Form IL-1040-X to amend an individual income tax return.
Include Supporting Documents – If you are amending due to a federal adjustment, wait until the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) finalizes it, and include supporting proof with your amended return.
Provide a Clear Explanation – Use Step 11, Line D of Form IL-1040-X to clearly explain the reason for the amendment. Incomplete or unclear explanations may delay processing.

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs also will be available to provide guidance on programs and services for qualified veterans. While a limited amount of laptops will be requires, attendees are required to bring their own.

Structure fire breaks out in Mahomet apartments displacing multiple families

One nearby resident, who lives four units down from the affected apartments and requested to remain anonymous, described the scene: “As soon as we saw flames shooting out of the windows, we grabbed our dog and our hamster, and what we could with the other hand and went outside in case the fire was going to spread to our unit. Thankfully, it didn’t, but it was scary for a while.”

RPC Cooling Program set to begin at June 9

The program begins on June 9, and is expected to help about 200 households. Resources allocated for utility assistance during the COVIID pandemic have not been sustained post pandemic by the federal government, causing the RPC to exhaust its funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in early May. With Summer 2025, the RPC administers a Summer Cooling program to support low-income households in Champaign County.
