CHAMPAIGN/URBANA (Chambana Today) – Dozens of community members, law enforcement officers, and local officials gathered this morning – first at Westside Park in Champaign, then in front of the Champaign County Courthouse to honor the sacrifice of police officers. All law enforcement agencies paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and recognized the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement.
Champaign Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler addressed the crowd, reflecting on the risks officers face every day. “Our officers put their lives on the line to protect this community,” Chief Tyler said. “Today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and honor all who continue to serve with courage and integrity.”
Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman also spoke at the second event, highlighting the bond between the community and its law enforcement. “It’s moments like this that remind us why we do what we do,” Sheriff Heuerman said. “These men and women leave their families behind each day to keep our neighborhoods safe, and their service deserves our deepest respect and gratitude.”
Champaign Mayor Deb Frank Feinen and Champaign County Executive Steve Summers each read proclamations acknowledging the service and dedication of police officers. Mayor Feinen emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Our police officers are not just public servants—they are neighbors, friends, and family. Today, we honor their bravery and their commitment to keeping Champaign safe.” Summers added, “Every officer’s sacrifice, whether big or small, strengthens the trust between law enforcement and the people they protect. We are grateful for their service.”
Both ceremonies featured stirring bagpipe music and the second one celebrated a performance by the St. Joseph-Ogden school choir.
