CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Residents of Champaign were excited to learn about the wonders of preserving their harvests through the time-honored art of canning foods.
“…learning the proper techniques to ensure food safety is crucial. This class teaches the practical steps of canning and emphasizes the importance of doing it correctly to avoid any risks,” said Registered Dietitian Rachel Mannen.
Participants were guided through the process of making apple marmalade with apples donated by Curtis Orchard and were allowed to take it home, along with the recipe. The workshop was led by Rachel Mannen, who was also a Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator. The workshop highlighted the process as well as the importance of canning food to reduce waste, preserve food, and enjoy seasonal produce throughout the year.
The Illinois Extension office also offers year-round pressure canner machine testing for those canning at home. For more information on upcoming classes, visit the Illinois extension website at go.illinois.edu/CFIV or contact the Champaign County office at 217-333-767.
