SPRRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Legislation prohibiting public school students from using cell phones and other wireless communication devices cleared Senate on Tuesday.

The policy change came from Governor J.B. Prtizker in February. At least nine other states have adopted similar policies, banning to use of cell phones in schools. Individual districts have also begun adopting their own policies, such as Peoria Public Schools.

“This policy has proven effective in reducing distractions, enhancing student focus and better fostering social interaction,” Peoria Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat told the committee. “Our data indicates it has also contributed to reducing reduction in bullying and physical fighting, thus creating a safer environment for students.”

Senate Bill 2427 would require all school boards to adopt policies, banning cell phones and other devices during instructional time. This includes cell phones, laptops, tablets and gaming devices which can provide communication between two or more parties. It would not, however, include school-issued devices.

The policies would provide exceptions that allow students to use them during emergencies or if they are needed for medical care.
