CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Fire Department (CFD) recently responded to an apartment building fire on Monday.

An apartment building on fire was reported by a passerby on Monday, November 25. The CFD responded by sending out firefighters at 12:56 p.m. and deployed a single hose line into an apartment. Fortunately, the fire crews were able to get the fire under control in time. The cause of the fire was attributed to a kitchen appliance and was entirely accidental.

The occupant of the unit with the appliance was not home at the time of the fire. The CFD would like to remind its citizens that when the smoke alarm sounds, it is crucial to get out and stay out. If you’re escaping through smoke, make sure to stay low to the ground and try to close doors behind you as you leave to slow the spread of smoke and fire.
