CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department (CPD) honored a fallen officer today on the anniversary of his death early this morning.

1:00 a.m., today, CPD officers and retirees gathered on Church Street to honor the fallen Officer Robert Tatman’s legacy of service. On November 25, 1967, Officer Tatman, Badge #80, informed headquarters that a car had been stopped on Church Street near Mattis Avenue in Champaign. At 1:09 a.m., a passing motorist used his squad car radio to report that the officer had been shot and was lying on the ground.

Units quickly rushed to the scene and found Officer Tatman down. An ambulance arrived to transport Officer Tatman to Mercy Hospital in Urbana. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival and no perpetrator was ever apprehended for the shooting.
