CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign and Urbana area schools will be celebrating National Bike & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 7.
The celebration involves parents, students, and teachers all biking and rolling to school. It is celebrated annually nationwide and builds on the popularity of Walk & Roll to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Bike & Roll to School events emphasize the importance of a range of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, cyclist and pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment, and building connections between families, schools, and the broader community.
The day also kicks off National Bike Month, with events such as the Mother’s Day Ride, the Ride of Silence, and promoting safe and fun bicycling for everyone through a Smart Cycling class. The event is organized by the C-U Safe Routes to School Project, the City of Champaign, Champaign County Bikes, and the City of Urbana with support from the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD).
