CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department (CPD) is reminding drivers to buckle up for Memorial Day travel.
The CPD is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement to increase enforcement for seat belts. Drivers can expect high-visibility seat belt enforcement throughout Illinois from May 16 to May 27, coinciding with the Memorial Day holiday.
“The decision to use a seat belt may seem trivial to some, but it can mean the difference between minor aches and serious injury,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “Every time you get into a vehicle, it is important to buckle up for safety, whether you’re the driver or a passenger.”
Illinois’ seat belt law was enacted on July 1, 1985 and strengthened in July 2003 to allow officers to pull over drivers who aren’t buckled up. Seat belt usage has increased from 15.9% in 1985 to 92.4% in 2024. During the campaign, officers will enforce the usage of vehicle restraints. Those found unbuckled will be issued citations and written warnings. Efforts to address seat belt concerns in Champaign will focus on arterial routes.
