CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Illinois Athletics is partnering with Feeding Our Kids for a project to help feed the hungry.
The initiative will feature several donation opportunities at Illinois basketball games along with a community service day for Fighting Illini student-athletes and staff. Listed below are the dates and games hosting food donation drives:
- Jan. 8 – Men’s basketball vs. Penn State
- Jan. 9 – Women’s basketball vs. Iowa
- Jan. 11 – Men’s basketball vs. USC
- Jan. 19 – Women’s basketball vs. Michigan State
- Jan. 23 – Men’s basketball vs. Maryland
The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics staff and student-athletes will be at the Eastern Illinois Food Bank assembling food packages and delivering them to local schools on January 13 to January 14. Food items ideal for donation are individually wrapped items such as fruit cups, peanut butter, raisins, pudding, squeezable yogurt, mac n cheese, Chef Boyardee, rice packets, granola bars, canned soups, Vienna sausages, and much more.
According to data from Feeding America, Champaign County suffers from 10.5% overall food insecurity and a 12.2% food insecurity rate for children with over 27,000 overall residents in Champaign County living in food insecurity.
