CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Illinois men’s basketball will keep one of its top young stars for another season.

Freshman forward David Mirković announced Wednesday he will return to Champaign for his sophomore year, sharing the news during a livestream in his typical playful fashion.

After briefly teasing fans with a fake-out ending, Mirković revealed his decision with a simple message: “I’m back.”

The 6-foot-9 forward is coming off an impressive freshman campaign for the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball, averaging 13.3 points, eight rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. His performance earned him a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and quickly made him one of the team’s most important players.

Mirković’s combination of size and versatility helped him stand out throughout the season. He led Illinois in rebounding and proved effective scoring around the rim, while also stretching the floor with his outside shooting.

He shot 37.5% from three-point range on more than four attempts per game, fitting into the Illini’s system that emphasizes perimeter shooting at every position.

Head coach Brad Underwood also relied on Mirković’s ball-handling ability, often using him as a point-forward to initiate the offense. His return is a significant development for Illinois as the program looks to build on last season and remain competitive in the Big Ten.
