SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois State Board of Education urges local school districts to adopt clear policies when complying with federal immigration officials.
The “non-regulatory guidance” on immigration enforcement was issued on Wednesday, January 22. Acting Secretary Benjamine Huffman rescinded a policy that limited immigration enforcement actions in or near “sensitive locations” such as schools, playgrounds, childcare centers and school bus stops. The guidance explains that the Department of Homeland Security may deputize state and local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration law.
However, school officials are reminded of the Keep Illinois Families Together Act, which states that “..no Illinois law enforcement agency or official is allowed to take part in such an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.” The guidance explains how the Illinois TRUST Act also restricts the way law enforcement may participate in federal civil immigration matters.
“These pieces of legislation would apply to law enforcement agencies that might otherwise have a relationship or presence on the school’s property,” the document states.
The document advises districts to name a person or department where federal authorities can be directed. It also urges designating a “point person” to review record requests or subpoenas from immigration agencies.
