DECATUR, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illlinois Cottage Food industry is providing opportunities for home cooks, canners, and bakers.

Current legislation has expanded a list of foods and drinks that cottage operators can make and sell, including jams, jellies, and yeast breads. As a part of being a Cottage Food Operation, entrepreneurs must follow the best safety practices, including taking a Certified Food Protection Managers course and exam, which University of Illinois Extension offers regularly throughout the year.

“Cottage food operations are a great way to trial your new business on a small scale,” says Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator Caitlin Mellendorf. “This way, entrepreneurs can refine their products, put strong food safety protocols in place, and create a manageable business plan.”

Entrepreneurs must also register with their local health department. In DeWitt and Piatt counties, visit dewittpiatthealth.com or call 217-935-3427.
