CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – As the holiday season approaches, the Champaign County police departments are gearing up to compete in the second annual Battle of the Badges Salvation Army Red Kettle Challenge.
The competition takes place from December 6 to 7 and aims to raise funds to support The Salvation Army’s “Love Beyond Christmas” Red Kettle campaign with a fundraising goal of $200,000. This year’s competitors include the Champaign, Urbana, Mahomet, and Rantoul police departments. The community must support their favorite department by donating to each team’s kettle location during these dates and times:
- Rantoul Police Department: December 6, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Walmart in Rantoul
- Champaign Police Department: December 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hobby Lobby in Champaign
- Urbana Police Department: December 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Blain’s Farm & Fleet in Urbana
- Mahomet Police Department: December 7, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Schnucks in Mahomet
The Champaign Police Departments raised $839.38 last year with a total of $2,016.16 raised by all departments. The funds from this year’s challenge will stay local, helping The Salvation Army serve approximately 76,000 people in Champaign County annually.
Captain Kenyon and Captain Melissa Sivels of The Salvation Army of Champaign County expressed their gratitude, stating, “Our first responders understand that the holiday season brings unique challenges for many of our neighbors in Champaign County, and we are grateful for their generosity in helping The Salvation Army bring hope and stability to those who need it most—during Christmas and throughout the year. Every donation made to a Red Kettle stays local and is a step toward lifting someone out of hardship.”
