CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The American Red Cross encourages safety during the holiday season and are providing their tips.

“December is the peak time for home fires involving candles and holiday decorations. Help protect your family by using battery-operated candles and practicing your two-minute escape plan with everyone in your household,” said Rodrigo Carrillo, Illinois Red Cross Regional Disaster Officer.

The Red Cross offers their tips to ensure a safe holiday season:

  • Candle Safety: If using candles, keep them away from anything that can burn and place them out of reach of pets and children. Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Check Holiday Lights: Ensure all holiday light cords are in good condition, not frayed or broken. Do not string more than three strands of lights together per extension cord.
  • Outdoor Decorations: Use decorations designed for outdoor use and secure lights properly to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails, make sure they are insulated to avoid fire hazards.
  • Artificial Trees: Choose a tree labeled as fire-resistant. Place it away from fireplaces, radiators, and other heat sources, and avoid using electric lights on metallic trees.
  • Live Trees: Select a fresh tree and keep it well-watered. Bend the needles up and down to ensure they do not fall off.
  • Fireplace Precautions: Do not light the fireplace if stockings or other decorations are hung on the mantel.
