MAHOMET, IL (Chambana Today) – A confirmed structure fire broke out at the Lake of Woods Apartments in Mahomet.

Just before 3:00 p.m., a structure fire broke out, displacing several families and prompting an emergency response from six area agencies. The fire led to the evacuation and relocation of families from the adjacent apartments as a precaution. As of 4:15 p.m., many of the emergency personnel were seen standing by or sitting outside, indicating the blaze appears to be under control.

However, no official confirmation has been given regarding whether the fire is fully extinguished. There are no confirmed reports of injury and Prairieview Road remains closed to traffic at both its north and south access points due to the emergency.

One nearby resident, who lives four units down from the affected apartments and requested to remain anonymous, described the scene: “As soon as we saw flames shooting out of the windows, we grabbed our dog and our hamster, and what we could with the other hand and went outside in case the fire was going to spread to our unit. Thankfully, it didn’t, but it was scary for a while.”

ChambanaToday has reached out to the Mahomet Police Department for more information but has not yet received a response. This story will be updated as more details become available.
