CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) recently issued a Campus Safety notice regarding the report of a sexual assault.
The Unviersity Police received a report on Sunday about a sexual assault that occurred approximately after 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14 at a sorority house in the campus district. The offender was a person that was known to the victim, but other details were not included to protect the victim’s identity and prevent psychological harm.
The UIUC would like to provide their safety tips:
- Intervene Safely: If you notice a situation that seems unsafe for another person, intervene if it is safe to do so or call for assistance.
- Report Crimes: While it is always the victim’s decision to report crime to the police, reporting can be an effective tool to prevent future crimes. The university, community organizations, and local law enforcement offer various reporting options.
- Consent is Essential: When engaging in sexual activity, enthusiastic consent is essential. Consent is an active process free from coercion, which can be revoked at any time. Check in with your partners and pay attention to how everyone is feeling.
- Stay Safe: Walk in groups, avoid isolated or dark areas, and trust your instincts. If a situation does not feel right, it probably is not.
