CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) has made an arrest in connection to a recent sexual abuse incident. On Saturday, March 1, UIPD officers were dispatched to an off-campus apartment near the intersection of East Chalmers and South First Streets, just before 2 a.m. The victim, a woman, reported that an unknown suspect had followed her into the building and sexually abused her. She fought back, and the suspect fled the scene.
In their investigation, UIPD detectives used technology, including Flock License Plate Readers and the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System to gather more information about the suspect’s vehicle. On Thursday, March 6, UIPD patrol officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle. The driver initially gave officers a fake name but was later identified as 18-year-old Pedro Nolasco-Martin of Champaign. He was arrested for obstructing justice.
After further questioning, detectives obtained information that implicated Nolasco-Martin in the sexual abuse incident. The Champaign County State’s Attorney charged him with one count each of criminal sexual abuse, criminal sexual assault, and burglary. Nolasco-Martin was arraigned on March 7 and was released pending trial.
UIPD has not confirmed whether Nolasco-Martin is a student at the University of Illinois.
