URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – The Urbana and Champaign Park Districts will host the Martin Luther King Jr. March for Peace on April 4, the date Dr. King was assassinated.
The March for Peace is in collaboration with the Urbana Rotary club and other organizations to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his peaceful activism. The march starts at 5:30 p.m. at King Park and will have people march to the the Champaign Park District’s Douglass Community Center. The Urbana Free Library will have an exhibit from the Champaign County Historical Archives at the Douglass Branch Library City for attendees to view.
“It is important for Dr. King’s message of peaceful resolutions to resonate with all of us,” said Tim Bartlett, Urbana Park District Executive Director. He added, “This march hopefully will remind us all to be peacemakers every day.”
“Champaign Park District respects the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and appreciates any opportunity to unite Champaign and Urbana in peace,” said Sarah Sandquist, Champaign Park District Executive Director. “I look forward to taking time to reflect on our community as we travel together from King Park to Douglass Park.”
The event will be free and the Champaign Park District will provide transportation between King Park and the Douglass Center so participants can return to their cars at the end of the evening.
