CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A Champaign man has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting incident that occurred on July 28, 2024, in which two teens were killed and two others injured.
Champaign Police responded at 12:34 a.m. on July 28, 2024, to reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive. Officers discovered multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders quickly rendered aid, and the victims were transported to a nearby hospital. Among the victims were 18-year-old George Dorris-Rodgers and 18-year-old Daniyjah Staple, both from Champaign, who later died from their injuries. Two other individuals, a 25-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, were treated and released for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex, where individuals, including 22-year-old Corey Butler of Champaign, opened fire. In addition to the fatalities and injuries, a vehicle was also damaged in the incident. After an extensive investigation, police charged Butler with multiple counts of murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Butler was already in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Facility at the time of the charges.
Though an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing, and police are requesting additional witnesses or video footage that may assist in the case.
