Champaign Fire Department responds to fire in commercial and apartment building

The Champaign Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire in a commercial and multi-family apartment building on the 100 block of E. University Ave. Tuesday evening, April 8. Fire crews responded to an automatic alarm at approximately 8:40 p.m. and found that the sprinkler system had already been activated.

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire in a commercial and multi-family apartment building on the 100 block of E. University Ave. Tuesday evening, April 8. Fire crews responded to an automatic alarm at approximately 8:40 p.m. and found that the sprinkler system had already been activated.

Upon arrival, firefighters upgraded the incident to a working fire. They located a small fire between the commercial space on the first floor and the residential units on the second floor. A single hose line was deployed, and crews were able to contain the fire to its area of origin, preventing further damage.

The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by energized electrical equipment. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, either to the firefighters or building occupants.
