CHAMPAIGN-URBANA (Chambana Today) – As Juneteenth approaches, the Champaign-Urbana area is preparing a range of community-centered events that highlight the history, culture, and legacy of the holiday. From panel discussions and family fun to special museum access across the region, residents will have multiple ways to engage and reflect.
The City of Urbana invites the public to “Understanding Juneteenth: History, Liberation, and Legacy” on Wednesday, June 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Urbana Park District’s Health & Wellness Center, located at 2002 East Washington Street. The event will feature panel discussions, presentations, and interactive activities designed to explore the significance and ongoing impact of Juneteenth.
Festivities continue the following day on Thursday, June 19, with a Juneteenth Celebration at the Pool from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center. Activities include races, contests, and prizes. Admission is $9 for residents and $13 for non-residents.
For those preferring to celebrate from home or in smaller ways, consider supporting Black-owned businesses, enjoying traditional Black Southern cuisine, or exploring Black music playlists in recognition of Black Music Month.
