CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – As Juneteenth celebrations expand nationwide, Central Illinois communities are preparing a series of events that reflect on the past while celebrating freedom, culture, and community.
Juneteenth, recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their emancipation.
In Urbana, a Juneteenth parade will take place today, and in Champaign, a concert will happen in Douglass Park.
