CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) will host a free car seat inspection event on Monday, September 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the north parking lot garage of 201 W. Kenyon Road in Champaign. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on-site to help parents and caregivers ensure their car seats are installed correctly and safely — no appointment needed.
Though this event takes place ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27), organizers say it’s a timely opportunity to reduce risks for young passengers. “Most parents do what they can but are still unsure,” said Christina Ladage, a CUPHD representative. “They may be surprised to find out their children aren’t as secure as they think. We want to help caregivers ensure their children are safe.”
Alarming Rates of Misuse
Car seats, when used correctly, can dramatically reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash. However, data shows that misuse is widespread. According to NHTSA, 46% of car seats are used incorrectly nationwide. Locally, CUPHD found that 85% of car seats inspected in 2024 were misused — with common issues including improper installation or using the wrong type of seat for a child’s age and size.
During the inspection, each family will spend about 30 minutes with a certified technician. The check will include:
- Ensuring the child is in the appropriate seat for their age, height, and weight
- Verifying correct installation
- Educating caregivers on seat safety and registration for recalls
- Monthly Inspections & Car Seat Donations
For those unable to attend, CUPHD offers car seat checks on the second Monday of each month, by appointment. To schedule, call 217-353-4932. Additional inspection locations can be found at nhtsa.gov.
CUPHD’s Maternal and Child Health division is also hosting a car seat donation drive to support low-income families. New car seats can be donated through CUPHD’s Amazon Wish List or dropped off in person at the WIC window in the main lobby of the CUPHD office. Donated seats will be given to families in need along with professional guidance on proper installation.
