CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — In a historic announcement, the University of Illinois revealed that its iconic Memorial Stadium, a centennial symbol of Illini pride, will now be known as Gies Memorial Stadium. The change follows a record-breaking $100 million gift from alumnus and philanthropist Larry Gies, who is already the namesake of the Gies College of Business. The donation marks the largest single gift in the history of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) and one of the most significant contributions ever made to a college athletics program .
Gies’s contribution honors his late father, U.S. Army veteran Larry Gies Sr., and aims to preserve the legacy of military sacrifice. “This gift is about honoring my father, a true patriot, and every brave soul who has worn or will wear the uniform to defend our country,” Gies said. “With this investment, we can ensure that this stadium continues to be a place where their sacrifices will never be forgotten.” Chancellor Charles Isbell Jr. praised the act as a powerful testament to veterans: “His generosity … ensures that our stadium will continue to stand proudly as a lasting tribute … for the next 100 years and beyond.”
Under Athletic Director Josh Whitman, Fighting Illini athletics—particularly in football and basketball—have surged in performance. In 2024, the football team tied a school record with 10 wins, captured the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, and ended the season ranked No. 16, its highest finish since 2001. This year, the team entered the Top 10 for the first time in 24 years. Meanwhile, men’s basketball notched its sixth straight 20-win season, while women’s basketball made consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and captured the WBIT title in 2024.
Whitman, echoing the long-term impact of the gift, reflected on his partnership with Larry Gies. “This gift is the result of years of thought-provoking conversations and is the continuation of a long-term partnership with Larry that will benefit generations of student-athletes and advance this program to even greater heights.”
Gies’s philanthropic legacy at Illinois dates back to 2017, when he and his wife, Beth, made a $150 million gift resulting in the naming of the Gies College of Business. At that time, Gies described his motivation: “Expanding access to a great education levels the playing field. Education changes the life of a student, as well as the trajectory of the family for generations.”
The university will hold a press conference this afternoon, led by Whitman and Chancellor Isbell, to formally unveil Gies Memorial Stadium and reflect on the significance of the gift to the future of Fighting Illini Athletics.
