URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — On September 8 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Urbana Police responded to the 1500 block of East Washington Street for a report of shot fired. Several individuals were involved in an argument when of the individuals left the area and returned a short time later in a vehicle. The individual exited the car and fired into an occupied vehicle. No individuals were struck by gunfire during the incident.

The offender was identified as 39-year-old Demetrius Vaughn, who fled the scene before police arrived. As the investigation continued, probable cause was developed and a warrant was issued for the arrest of Vaughn for aggravated discharge of a firearm.

On October 7, Vaughn was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force without incident. Although the original warrant was for aggravated discharge of a firearm, additional charges were later filed by the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office, including attempted first degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated battery.
