URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Mayor DeShawn Williams is assuring residents that while federal immigration enforcement actions have recently taken place in Urbana and nearby areas, the Urbana Police Department has not been involved in those operations.
In a statement issued by the City of Urbana, Williams said that any such enforcement activities have been carried out solely by federal authorities and that the city has not coordinated with or assisted in them. “The City of Urbana remains firmly committed to following both Illinois law and our own sanctuary city resolution,” Williams said. “Our role in federal civil immigration enforcement is extremely limited and intentionally so.”
The mayor emphasized Urbana’s continued focus on safety, inclusion, and equal access to city services for all residents, regardless of race, color, or national origin. He added that the city will continue monitoring any federal activity and work to keep the community informed.
Williams encouraged residents to know their rights and to seek help from trusted local organizations that offer legal and immigration support.
“We are one community, and we look out for one another,” he said. “Urbana will continue to stand for dignity, safety, and respect for all.”
