CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) – As Thanksgiving approaches, Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman is urging residents to take extra precautions when hitting the road. Starting now and continuing through December 2nd, Sheriff’s deputies will be conducting increased enforcement to ensure the safety of county roadways.
“Thanksgiving brings more vehicles, longer trips, and more festivities,” said Sheriff Heuerman. “Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to save your life in a crash. We’re asking every driver and passenger to buckle up, every trip, every time – and to make a plan for a designated driver or other safe way home before the celebrations begin.”
The Sheriff’s Office is also reminding drivers to plan ahead for a designated driver or alternative transportation if they plan to drink or use cannabis. Deputies are emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence, with the effects of cannabis potentially impairing reaction times and judgment even after it seems to wear off.
Safety Tips for the Holiday Season:
- Choose a designated, sober driver or use a taxi or rideshare service (Uber, Lyft, etc.).
- Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or cannabis.
- Always wear your seatbelt, and ensure that all passengers do the same.
- If you spot an impaired driver, pull over safely and call 911.
This Thanksgiving enforcement effort is supported by federal traffic safety funds and aligns with Illinois’ statewide campaigns like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket”.
