CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College will offer two Spanish-language shows on Saturday, February 7.
The planetarium will present “Un cielo, un mundo: La aventura de Big Bird,” a Sesame Street show offering an introduction into the night sky. The show takes viewers on a trip to the moon with Big Bird, Elma, and Hu Hu Zhu.
The show is funded by a PNC Foundation grant and produced by the Adler Planetarium, Sesame Workshop, the Beijing Planetarium, and Liberty Science Center. It begins at 3:30 p.m.
The planetarium will also present “Astronomía a gran escala” at 4:30 p.m. later that day. The full dome show showcases why Chile is home to many world-class observatories and the people who work on these instruments.
The show will be presented by Ricardo Covarrubias, Ph.D., who teaches astronomy at Parkland College and grew up near many of these telescopes in Chile. Dr. Covarrubias will also show what can be found in the night sky during winter.
Admission for each show costs $4. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door beginning a half-hour before each show. Members of the Friends of the Staerkel Planetarium are admitted for free. For more information on upcoming Staerkel Planetarium events, visit planetarium.parkland.edu.
