CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The City of Urbana is inviting poets across Champaign County to apply for the 2026 cycle of its Poet Laureate Program, with applications open from Feb. 1 through March 1.

Now entering its sixth cycle, the Poet Laureate Program recognizes a local poet who reflects Urbana’s diverse community and promotes poetry as an essential art form. The selected poet serves as an advocate for poetry, language and the arts, sharing their work and engaging residents through readings, events and community programming.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 21 years old, have lived in Champaign County for a minimum of one year prior to applying, and demonstrate an active commitment to poetry through performance, publication or curated presentations. Applicants must also show a strong connection to the community and be willing to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

The program was launched in April 2019 by the City of Urbana’s Office of the Mayor in partnership with the Urbana Arts & Culture Program. Since its inception, the initiative has aimed to elevate creative writing, foster civic dialogue and highlight the voices and stories that shape Urbana.

More information about eligibility requirements, program expectations and the application process is available on the city’s Arts & Culture Program webpage at UrbanaIL.gov.
