URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — The City of Urbana is calling on local writers to apply for its 2026 Poet Laureate program, with applications due Sunday, March 1.

The Poet Laureate serves as a literary ambassador for the community, promoting poetry through public readings, workshops and civic events. City officials say the program highlights the importance of the arts while strengthening connections across Champaign County.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 21 years old and have lived in Champaign County for at least one year prior to applying. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to the community and be active as poets through performances, publications or editorial and curatorial work.

In addition to literary accomplishments, applicants must be willing and enthusiastic about fulfilling the responsibilities of the position, which include engaging residents and supporting local arts initiatives.
