CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A central Illinois man is sharing his decades-long journey with chronic pain in hopes of helping others better understand a rare and often misunderstood condition.

During a recent “Ask the Pros” segment with SafeWorks Illinois, Dr. Fletcher introduced Brian, a longtime patient who has spent nearly 20 years navigating back injuries and recovery.

Brian first came under Dr. Fletcher’s care after a workplace injury that required back surgery. Following rehabilitation, he returned to full duty and remained stable for years. But in May 2024, a second work-related injury led to another back surgery — and a new, more complicated challenge.

Roughly 10 weeks after the procedure, Brian began experiencing severe symptoms in his foot, including burning pain, swelling and discoloration.

“It was extreme,” Brian said. “Hard to walk, hard to sleep. You just don’t want to do anything.”

Dr. Fletcher quickly identified the condition as complex regional pain syndrome, a disorder caused by nerve dysfunction that can lead to intense, persistent pain and sensitivity.

“It was a dramatic change,” Dr. Fletcher said. “You have to recognize it early and treat it aggressively, or patients can go months or years without answers.”

Treatment began with physical therapy, medications and specialized nerve blocks targeting the sympathetic nervous system. While those methods provided some relief, Brian’s condition required a more advanced solution.

He ultimately chose to undergo implantation of a spinal cord stimulator — a device that sends electrical signals to the spinal cord to disrupt pain signals traveling to the brain.

“It’s a big decision,” Dr. Fletcher said. “You’re implanting a medical device, but for many patients, it can improve function and quality of life.”

Since receiving the implant about six weeks ago, Brian says his pain level has dropped from an eight out of 10 to about a six. He has also significantly reduced his reliance on pain medications.

“I’ve gotten some improvement,” he said. “I’m optimistic and moving forward.”

Dr. Fletcher noted that outcomes vary, but success is measured by reduced pain, improved function and decreased dependence on medication. He emphasized that awareness of the condition remains a major challenge.

“Many doctors aren’t familiar with it,” he said. “That’s why it’s important for patients to advocate for themselves and seek answers.”

Brian now shares his experience with others considering similar treatment options, encouraging patients to ask questions and explore all available care.

“I had to do something,” he said. “If my story helps someone else, it’s worth it.”
