DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) — The Danville Fire Department wants to ensure that every home within the City of Danville is equipped with working smoke alarms, which is a critical component of fire safety and early detection.
Through this program, Danville residents can request free smoke alarms and professional installation by trained personnel. The goal is to simply reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities by making homes safer and more prepared.
“Working smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your family from fire, ” said Chief Aaron Marcott. “According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. That’s a statistic we can change by making sure every home in Danville is properly equipped.”
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) also reports that the risk of dying in a reported home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. Despite this, many households either lack alarms altogether or have units that are outdated or nonfunctional due to missing or dead batteries.
Residents interested in participating in the Free Smoke Alarm Program are encouraged to register through the department’s new Community Connect platform at https://www.communityconnect.io/info/il-danville to schedule their installation and provide important household information that can assist first responders in an emergency.
Residents may also contact the Danville Fire Department directly at 217-431-2350 for additional information.
The Danville Fire Department encourages all residents to test their smoke alarms monthly, to replace batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are installed in every sleeping area and on every level of the home.
