CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The community is cordially invited to the groundbreaking ceremony of the Downtown Plaza’s initial phase. This event will take place at One E. Main St. on July 12, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen and State Senator Paul Faraci will deliver speeches. The public is encouraged to join in celebrating this momentous occasion. Big Grove Tavern will provide refreshments.
The Downtown Plaza’s construction fulfills a long-held dream of establishing a communal space in downtown’s core. The Neil Street Plaza Placemaking Plan, a result of 18 months of public engagement, was approved by the Champaign City Council in 2019. This plan originated from Champaign citizens’ desire to transform a municipal parking lot into an inviting and dynamic public square. The initiative drew numerous contributors who imparted their ideas and aspirations for this new civic area. The Downtown Plaza is designed to attract a diverse range of visitors, enhance the community’s profile, and serve as a purpose-designed venue for special events.
The plaza’s development will occur in two stages. The initial phase will feature a performance stage, various seating options, bench swings, ornamental lighting, and art installations. This phase is supported by a $500,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for Tourism Attractions and Festivals. The second phase, set to begin in 2026, is backed by a $12 million grant from the same department. It will introduce a grand lawn, vendor kiosks, interactive illumination, pop-jet fountains, among other attractions.
