URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – Residents across the cities of Champaign and Urbana now have access to new, affordable fiber internet services through Volo Internet + Tech (Volo). This Urbana-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) now provides gigabit fiber services using the fiber broadband network known as UC2B. Offering symmetrical (equal upload and download) speeds of up to 1000mbps, Volo’s new Extended Fiber offering brings a hyper-local, super-fast internet option.
These services are immediately available to tens of thousands of residents throughout Champaign and Urbana via the UC2B network, expanded and managed by i3 Broadband. Peter Folk, Volo’s founder and CEO, explains, “Fiber internet at home is a critical component to being competitive in today’s modern internet world. Our Extended Fiber is the first competitive service available in most of Champaign-Urbana, offering a new low price from a 100% local, customer-focused provider.”
The UC2B fiber network was built in collaboration between the University of Illinois and the cities of Champaign and Urbana in 2012, thanks to a U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) grant under the Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program (BTOP). The network aimed to provide broadband internet service to community anchor institutions and underserved households. i3 Broadband continues to manage the network infrastructure and services.
