CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Drivers traveling through the Interstate 57 and Interstate 74 interchange in Champaign County should prepare for additional ramp closures this summer as work continues on the final stages of a major reconstruction project.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that several ramps are currently closed as crews connect newly constructed ramps and bridges to the rebuilt interstate lanes as part of the $251.8 million interchange upgrade.

Current ramp closures:

  • Eastbound I-74 to northbound I-57 (closed May 26 through approximately June 23)
  • Westbound I-74 to northbound I-57 (closed May 26 through approximately June 23)
  • Northbound I-57 to Olympian Drive (closed May 26 through approximately June 23)
  • Northbound I-57 to westbound I-74 (closed June 2 through approximately June 23)

Upcoming closures:

  • Southbound I-57 to westbound I-74: June 24 through July 22
  • Northbound I-57 to eastbound I-74: July 8 through July 22
  • Westbound I-74 to southbound I-57: July 23 through Aug. 20
  • Eastbound I-74 to southbound I-57: July 23 through Aug. 20
  • Southbound I-57 to eastbound I-74: July 23 through Aug. 20

IDOT said motorists should follow posted detours and allow extra travel time while the closures are in place. The work involves tying newly constructed ramps and bridges into the rebuilt interstate lanes with permanent connections.

Transportation officials are urging drivers to pay close attention to changing traffic patterns, obey posted speed limits and remain alert for workers and equipment in the construction zone.
