DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – The Danville Police Department (DPD) are giving their top tips for a safe and fun Halloween to ensure you and your child’s safety.

Trick-or-treating in Danville will be taking place on Thursday, October 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A primary concern of the DPD is the safety of the children celebrating and managing pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the roads. Parents are reminded to keep an eye on their child and keep watch for risks to their child and the community. Individuals may not choose to participate in the distribution of candy and the DPD reminds individuals to respect these choices.

Here are some safety tips for:

Costumes:

  • Consider wearing a protective mask under the costume mask.

  • Avoid costumes that could cause tripping.

  • Ensure proper fitting footwear.

  • Avoid masks that reduce vision.

  • Use reflective tape or carry a flashlight if wearing dark clothing.

  • Be cautious of open flames or heat sources from decorations.

  • Remember that pets may not recognize children in costumes and could get scared.

Treats:

  • Wash hands before eating treats.

  • Wait until home to inspect treats before eating.

  • Discard unpackaged items or opened wrappers.

  • Report suspicious items to the police.

Stay Safe Rules:

  • Respect neighbors and their property.

  • Travel in groups if not accompanied by an adult.

  • Visit homes in your neighborhood or familiar places.

  • Have a meeting spot in case you get separated.

  • Only visit homes with their porch lights on.
