MAHOMET, IL (Chambana Today) – Westbound lanes of Interstate 74 were closed for nearly seven hours on Friday following a two-vehicle crash near Mahomet. The accident, which occurred at approximately 4:14 p.m., caused significant traffic disruptions as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

According to the Illinois State Police Troop 7, the crash took place near milepost 170.5 in Champaign County. A Toyota traveling eastbound lost control, crossed the median, and entered the westbound lanes, where it was struck by a Saturn.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries, while the Saturn’s driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. Details on their current conditions have not been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined what led to the Toyota’s loss of control.

Emergency personnel worked diligently to investigate the incident and clear the roadway. I-74 westbound lanes were finally reopened at approximately 11:24 p.m., nearly seven hours after the crash was first reported.
