CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois women’s basketball team wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a 69-57 victory over Southern at State Farm Center on Friday afternoon. With four players in double figures, the Fighting Illini improved to 10-1 on the season, marking their second 10-win performance before Christmas under head coach Shauna Green.
Jasmine Brown-Hagger, making her third consecutive start, led the charge for the Illini with 20 points, her second 20-point performance of the season. Brown-Hagger contributed significantly in the first half, scoring a game-high 16 points and adding five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
“I thought Jasmine really stepped up for us today,” said Coach Green. “Her ability to score and facilitate really helped set the tone for the team.”
Kendall Bostic securing her fourth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. The senior forward moved into a tie for second place on Illinois’ career double-doubles list. Bostic also added two blocks and two steals in the win.
Genesis Bryant added another solid performance with 14 points, marking her fourth consecutive game in double figures. Bryant connected on three 3-pointers and also recorded five assists, three rebounds, and a steal. Adalia McKenzie chipped in 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, continuing her strong all-around play for the Illini.
Illinois took control of the game early, with the Jaguars scoring the first points of the contest before the Illini went on a 13-2 run. Bostic, Brown-Hagger, and Bryant provided all the scoring during that stretch, giving Illinois a 13-4 lead at the first media timeout.
With their nonconference slate now complete, Illinois will turn its attention to Big Ten play, which resumes on December 28. The Fighting Illini will host Oregon at State Farm Center in their conference opener, set for 2 p.m.
