CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the westbound Interstate 74 ramp to southbound I-57 in Champaign will close starting the night of Sunday, March 2.

The closure is due to the completion of the current stage of construction on the I-74 bridge over I-57 and work underneath the bridge on I-57. The construction is expected to last until late summer or early fall. Westbound I-74 traffic wanting to travel south on I-57 must used the marked detour, which will use the new I-74 ramp to northbound I-57 and exits at Market Street. There will be temporary signals to expedite traffic through the interchange.

Motorists are encouraged to follow the marked detour where the next available exit will be Mahomet. Expect delays and allow for extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. IDOT plans on improving more than 3,200 miles of highway over the next six years along with 9 million square feet of bridge deck.

This is all a part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. So far, Rebuild Illinois is on year five and its accomplishments include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
